Frequently Asked Questions

“What time do I have to be at the airport before the departure of my flight?”

The airlines recommend you arrive at the airport about one to two hours before your flights departure time.  If you are concerned or have individual questions, contact the airline. At AZO the Airport terminal opens at 4:00 am and the TSA Checkpoint opens at 4:30am. For flights later in the day TSA opens the checkpoint one-hour before departure time.

“Does Kalamazoo have a place to purchase gifts/souvenirs and food/drinks?”

Yes, Tailwind has a concessions and gift area on the post-security side and drink and snack concession machines on the pre-security side of the airport.  To view the Post-Security concessions area, click here.

What time does the Airport terminal open and close?

The Airport terminal opens at 4:00 am and closes at midnight or 30-minutes after the last flight arrives?

What time does the TSA check-point open?

The TSA opens their checkpoint at 4:30 am and closes when the last flight leaves. For flights later in the day TSA opens the checkpoint one-hour before departure time.

“Can I bring liquids in my carryon?”

1.  All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.

2.  All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

3.  Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

If you have any specific questions you can check out a full listing of what is allowed on board at TSA.gov or call (866) 289-9673.

“I’m going to be flying out of Kalamazoo and was wondering if I could take some items.”

You should refer to the TSA Prohibited items checklist.  If it’s not covered on the checklist, it probably isn’t allowed.  For further questions check the TSA website or call their number (866) 289-9673.

“Can I lock my luggage with a padlock?”

TSA screens every passenger’s baggage before it is placed on an airplane. While our technology allows us to electronically screen bags, there are times when we need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal “master” keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. These locks are available at airports and travel stores nationwide. The packaging on the locks indicates whether they can be opened by TSA.

“Am I able to travel with Smart Luggage?”

You are able to travel with Smart Luggage as long as the battery is removable.

“What if I don’t have a picture ID, or even any sort of ID at all?”

The TSA understands passengers occasionally arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID, does not necessarily mean a passenger won’t be allowed to fly. If passengers are willing to provide additional information, we have other means of substantiating someone’s identity, like using publicly available databases.   Passengers who are cleared through this process may be subject to additional screening. Passengers whose identity cannot be verified by TSA may not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint or onto an airplane.   Please allow extra time for this process. Visit TSA Identity Requirements for more information.

No one under the age of 18 will be required to show an ID at the TSA check-point.  Some airlines have specific policies for children flying alone.  Check with your airline before booking a ticket for information on their policy.

“How can I rent a hangar at Kalamazoo Airport?”

“My luggage didn’t come in on my flight, where can I pick it up?”

“I got a call my luggage arrived, where can I pick it up?”

Luggage can be picked up at your airlines ticket counter.  For individual baggage questions, call or visit your airlines baggage website for further information (links and numbers listed below).

I have an air freight package coming to Kalamazoo. Where do I pick it up?”

It depends on the airline.  Ask the ticket counter of the airline your package is coming in on – they will be able to direct your package to where you want it to go or instruct you on what you can do to get it to your final destination.

Do you give helicopter rides at your airport or are there any in the area that do?”

Not to our knowledge, you might want to do a search to check local companies that have started, but the only ones we know of are based in Detroit, MI.
